to my three sons…

In the lead up to this year’s mothers’ day I have been contemplative. I naturally have thought of my ideal day- you know the usual: the house to myself while I lay on the couch under a crotchet blanket enjoying my new book club book and you guys evacuate our little house on the hill.  Will it happen? Maybe, maybe, not. Most of the mothers I know say that all they want is for their children to stop fighting for one day. Ok- let us not go AJ Magnay CRAZY here, I am a realist. I would settle if the … Continue reading  to my three sons…

all I need is 4 diamonds and I feel at home…

There are few places left for me now that remind me of my childhood. The home that I grew up in was sold while I was living in Germany straight after I left school. My Nan’s house in Ballina where I spent almost all of my Christmases was sold when she died two months short of her 97th birthday. When I drive into my old neighbourhood and I turn into Parade Street and take that next right into Showview Street an emotional mix of feelings conjure. The trees are older, still silent and forever a faithful witness to many of … Continue reading all I need is 4 diamonds and I feel at home…

many hands make light work…

The members of my family have just finished some pretty high level negotiations on matters that I think will impact on their ultimate survival. These talks have been lengthy, at times heated and very long overdue. But it would seem that finally, we have created a document that I wish was legally binding. After any breach policemen would be allowed to swarm into my house. They would identify the offender, issue them with a stern talking to. This would see said child scampering away to complete pre-agreed upon task as set out in the above mentioned contract. I am of … Continue reading many hands make light work…

What is there not to love???

If I couldn’t be an Aussie then I would have to be a Kiwi. I am a proud Australian (well I use to always be, perhaps I am not as proud in the last six years). Traveling in Europe in the early two thousands I met a few Americans that placed Canadian flags on their backpacks. I never thought it would be something that I would need to consider. However in recent times I have thought that I might need to invest in a silver fern flag or as a  very budget last minute option I might need to colour … Continue reading What is there not to love???

one down, two to go…

The trend 6 years ago was to hold boys back a year, to have them start school aged 5 turning 6. Pages and pages of research are out there to be found as to the multiple reasons why this is so. In 2010, I needed Liam to go to kindergarten. I had all three of my boys at home in 2009 with my husband working in Ballina, the days were long. They weren’t all bad. But they were long. In fact I don’t have much memory of 2009 Liam 4, Hamish 2, and Kieran only 1. Luckily for me Liam … Continue reading one down, two to go…

out of control of my own life…

I need to CTRL-ALT-DEL my life, or rewind it back 20 kilograms ago. I feel disorganised, I am disorganised. Routines in my little house on the hill, are so stop-start. If only the boys could follow through with their jobs, like they do with their cricket strokes on Saturdays. We have tried to create chores lists over the years but, they are so hit and miss. All jobs, on the list are negotiated and renegotiated, to the extent that I am reassured my children, should be able to manipulate for themselves, excellent working conditions when they find fulltime employment. Expectations here … Continue reading out of control of my own life…

very fascinating indeed….

Spring is here, there is much to celebrate, end of winter sport for one. There are many occasions that take priority on the social calendar in spring, the most obvious perhaps is the day that stops a nation, well at least for around 3 minutes and 29seconds, give or take. How the first Tuesday in November is not a national holiday, is as hard to understand, as it is to spell diarrhoea. I am fascinated by the women’s fashions that are paraded around the track, particularly the fancy decorated sproutings that women display on their heads in a range of … Continue reading very fascinating indeed….
